How to Pack Furniture for Moving – Tips and Techniques

Moving to a new place can be difficult as it includes an overwhelming and huge amount of work. Packing furniture is one of the most important tasks of the moving process. Furniture is usually expensive, which is it must be carefully handle when you are moving it. A slight mishap can either break your furniture or give it scratches, decreasing its value. To move your furniture, you must get the right materials and wrap everything properly. This is necessary so everything stays in its right shape and does not get damaged. Ensure that you pack the big items first so most of the work is done and only the small items are left to be packed at the end. Here is how you can properly pack furniture for moving.

1- Get all the Necessary Packing Materials

The very first thing you must take care of is getting all the necessary items and packing materials required to pack furniture during a move. Although the list of packing materials isn’t huge, the following things are a must:

  • Plastic wrapping sheets
  • Bubble wrapping sheets
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Plastic bags
  • Covers for Furniture and Sofas
  • Duct tape
  • Blankets
  • Towels
  • Marker

2- Prepare a List of Furniture to move

Once all the packing material is with you, you must prepare the list of furniture pick up you will be carrying with you. Making a list will also help you determine how long it will take to pack your furniture or how long it will take to lift it onto a moving truck.

3- Measure Your Furniture’s Dimensions

Measure the entire dimensions of your furniture and the dimensions of passages and stairs before you lift it. In this way, moving the furniture through the halls and stairs becomes easy. If the sofa doesn’t fit, you can save a lot of time and frustration. Since the large pieces won’t pass through the doors, your only way is to dismantle the furniture into pieces.

4- Start Dismantling Furniture in Advance

To fit your furniture in the moving truck and avoid damage, the best practice is to dismantle the furniture into smaller pieces. For example, if you have a very large sofa or a dining table, consider removing its legs. If you have a king-sized bed, move all of its parts, and your room will become surprisingly spacious. This makes it convenient to move furniture and prevents damage from hitting walls and door frames when you lift it. Furthermore, packing the parts of furniture is also easier. Consider the following tips:

  • Use the instruction manual to determine how to properly disassemble the furniture whenever possible.
  • Make sure to place all the screws and nuts safely into a plastic bag and keep it with the furniture parts in a cardboard box.
  • Use duct tape to secure the plastic bag, so the parts aren’t lost while opening the boxes after the move.

5- Properly Pack the Furniture

Wrapping sheets made of plastic and bubble wrap are two packing materials that are ideal when you want to move your furniture safely. Make sure to use bubble wrap when you have wooden tables, chairs, and sofas. To protect the upholstery, you should use a plastic sheet. In case of emergency, you can use a worn-out blanket or comforter. It is also advisable to use a cardboard sheet between the pieces of wood. This provides additional protection and prevents dents when the truck moves on a damaged road.

If your dining table has a top made of glass, you should remove it first. The glass table top must cover with proper furniture covering and must be placed in a cardboard box. However, if you don’t have a cardboard box of the right size for this, make sure to cover the glass in a blanket and place it on the boxes in the truck. A mattress should be packed with a plastic covering to avoid moisture from getting into it. You can protect these items with plastic shrink wrap if you don’t have a proper cover.

6- Loading Furniture onto a Truck

Once the furniture has been properly disassembled and packed, you can start loading the furniture onto the truck. But how do you move furniture, especially if you are moving everything yourself? Hence while moving heavy furniture, you must rent a lifter.

7- Use a Furniture Lifter

When you are moving heavy furniture boxes towards the moving truck, always consider a powerlifting truck for it. Moving such boxes by lifting them yourself is risky and can cause severe injuries. A lifter makes it easier for you to place them properly in a truck. However, you must have a proper plan before placing the boxes in the truck. Make sure that the moving truck is in a steady position so that the items remain secure inside. Start by filling the farthest point inside the truck and place the last item near the door.

Make sure to follow the above steps carefully if you want to protect your furniture while moving it. Give special attention to fragile items that are easy to break to avoid any damage.
