Despite featuring a relatively finite timeline for its story arcs, Toriyama has been able to keep the series fresh by regularly releasing new material. This has allowed him to build a devoted fanbase around the world, despite the fact that pan Dragon Ball has never been released in North America.

Toriyama was born on October 5, 1954 in Fukuoka Prefecture, southern Japan. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in Hokkaido University but dropped out after two years to pursue his dream of becoming a manga artist. He then worked as an editor at several magazines before eventually being hired as an assistant to famed manga creator Osamu Tezuka.
